Schiedel’s horticultural legacy
By Tamara Botting

Horticulture is an ingrained part of the Schiedel family, and it shows.
Steve and Christine, the owners and operators of Hamilton Sod since
1989, will be opening their home garden for the Glanbrook Home Support
Programme's  Garden Tour, June 23-24.  Christine loves her garden.  "It's relaxing and nice after a busy day at the company," she commented.  When they started selling black garden soil about five years ago through the company, it was only natural to plant
flowerbeds at home.  Each year, they have been adding more plants to the
garden.  Besides creating a tranquil space for themselves, the Schiedel’s also
draw compliments from the neighbours for their garden.  In 2004 and again in
2005, their garden was granted the Trillium Award.  "I was surprised," Christine said.
The garden itself is a large mix of annuals and perennials, with special attention given to staggering the blooming seasons of the various plant life.  "That way, there's always some sort of colour," Christine explained.  "While the lilacs are flowering now, the roses will come in later."  The Schiedel’s agreed to allow their home to be one of the six houses on the tour mainly because "we love flowers, and we want to share what we have.  Hopefully, people will enjoy our garden as much as we do.  It was something we could do to support the community," Christine said.  If you are interested in purchasing tickets for the GHSP's Garden Tour,  June 23 and 24, contact the office at 905 692 3464 or go online at
