Lending a helping hand By Tamara Botting Published in The Glanbrook Gazette; Friday April 27, 2007, page 32.
Whether they can only help out a few times a year, or they give of their time every week, “Glanbrook Home Support pretty well runs on volunteers,” according to Janice Gumbley, Executive Director for the Glanbrook Home Support. April 15-21 was National Volunteer Week, which gives opportunity to recognize those who give back to the community and help to make the lives of others around them a bit better. Glanbrook Home Support is one organization dedicated to this. Through various efforts, including Meals on Wheels, providing transportation, and a foot care clinic, Glanbrook Home Support helps local seniors and adults with temporary or permanent disabilities to live independently and safely. By freely giving their time and efforts, the volunteers save Glanbrook Home Support literally thousands of dollars, which in turn allows them to provide more and affordable services to the community members. “We couldn’t do what we do without the volunteers,” Gumbley stated frankly. “If we had to pay for the workers, we couldn’t keep the services affordable. It helps us as an agency, but it really helps the clients we’re serving.” Currently, there are about one hundred regular-basis volunteers, and about the same number of casual-basis volunteers, who help out a couple of times a year for special events such as plant sales, Christmas house tours, and such. There is always more that could be done, though, and new volunteers are always welcome. “The volunteers are doing it from the heart, and it shows,” said Gumbley, wanting to express her gratitude for all that the volunteers do. Coming up in August, the Glanbrook Home Support will be holding its annual Appreciation Picnic and BBQ for the volunteers.
